Weekend Scoop for June 10, 2010

June 10, 2010

Two weeks have passed since I last scooped y’all.  Sorry for the lapse.  I’ve fallen down on the job, I know.  But here we are at another weekend and I’m going to make it up to you!  Of course, the big news of the weekend is the Alexander City Jazz Fest going on in Alexander City. AL.  (Freaky, the coincidence, I know.)  This festival is completely free and only a mere hour and a half away.  Kind of far for a day trip, (good luck getting a hotel at this late date) but totally worth it to see Southern Culture On The Skids.  (Banana puddin’.  Banana puddin’.  Bomp bomp!)  (Go ahead.  Click the link.  You’ll giggle.  And dance in your chair.  Go on ahead.)  But if you can’t make it out to Alabama fear not!  There’s plenty going on here in town to keep a body happy.

Thursday

I’m skipping this (mostly) on account of, well, I’m kind of late getting the scoop out.  Whoops.  I will tell you that as soon as I finish with this missive I will be heading downtown to Fountain City Coffee for Open Mic night and then either heading across the river to the Del Ranch for Open Mic there or down Broadway one block for Audio Fine Dining at 85.  I haven’t decided quite yet.

Friday

I got a note on my Facebook fan page about ‘Georgia On My Mind Day’ from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Georgia visitors center off I-85 exit 12.  (Williams Road.)  There will be over thirty exhibitors plus free hotdogs, popcorn, give aways, and all kind of free stuff.  Sounds like a fun day out for the kids!

Tonight, of course, is Southern Culture On The Skids.  Did I mention that already?  I think I might have mentioned that already.  I’m kind of excited about that.  Around town The Blue Hotel is playing at 85.  These kids from Atlanta rock it out kind retro-style.  (Their song ‘Wild Ride’ kind of has an Iron Butterfly vibe going on.)  I’ve been listening to them via their website while I write.  And of course there’s always No Shame Theater, which I have been assured is going on all summer long.  Tonight is a special Father’s Day performance even!   And I heard a rumor they’ve got hula hoops.  I love hula hoops.

Saturday

Much going on outside of the bar scene today, starting with an early morning guided hike at Oxbow Meadows Nature Center.  Also today Westville, just outside of Lumpkin, GA, is hosting their annual Military appreciation day.  All military and dependents (with proper ID of course) will be allowed to tour this working 1850′s village for free.  I love free!

The schedule for the Omnisphere Planitarium at Coca Cola Space Science Center has a full line-up of shows today starting with a showing of ‘Sesame Street’ (call me loony — or just a momma, but I want to see this one) at 11:00 this morning and ending with ‘Laser Vinyl’ at 8:00 this evening.  Speaking of the Space Science Center, tonight they will be hosting one of their Atronomy Nights in conjunction with the CSU Astronomy Dept at Providence Canyon State Park.  The group meets at 9:00pm at the Providence Canyon visitors center for a slide show followed by an opportunity to view the vast night skies through the CSU telescopes.

Sunday

Finish out your weekend with some jazz.  Tonight at 7:00 is the June meeting of the Columbus Jazz Society featuring The Mace Hibbard Quartet.  Bring your own snacks and tasty beverages out to The Liberty Theater of an evening of music.

Whatever you do, enjoy yourself!
