Weekend Scoop for June 23, 2010
The brilliant paintbox of colors that explode with the coming of spring have given way to the deep emerald greens of summer and with them the balmy, sun-kissed warmth of spring has been traded for the cloying, sticky heat that is summer in Georgia. I feel wilted. I feel lethargic. Lately it’s been taking increasingly more to motivate me out of my comfortable, air-conditioned house but I’ve found a few things going on around the region that seem worth venturing out of my cave.
Friday
Wanna get wet by moonlight? This evening Sweetwater Creek State Park (just west of Atlanta in Lithia Springs, GA) is hosting a twilight canoe trip. Participants must be at least 12 years of age and able to swim. The group meets at 7:00pm and the cost is $10 which includes canoe rental.
Closer to home, Neal Lucas is playing an all-ages show tonight at Ben’s Chophouse beginning at 8:00pm. Neal is such an absolutely mind-blowingly amazing (yes, I’m aware the hyperbole — it comes well deserved) blues guitarist. His voice, his licks, his soul…wow. Just…wow.
Saturday
This morning provides opportunities to get out and moving (and doing something constructive!) before the weather becomes oppressively hot. Oxbow Meadows hosts their twice-monthly Saturday morning guided nature walks at 8:00 this morning. Since I’ve been managing to get up and running (literally!) at 6:00 in the morning (!) a few times a week lately, I figure I can get up for this can’t I? If I can manage, this will have me already up and moving in plenty of time to hit Market Days on Broadway. I can almost taste succulent and juicy heirloom tomatoes with just a pinch of salt and a drizzle of olive oil.
And just as Market Days is winding down, the last local festival of the season is just gearing up. I’ve been looking forward to River Jam since I first heard about it. This event, organized by the delightful Gini Woolfolk and her compadre, Dan Davidson, will feature some of the regions best bluegrass — Gini herself (of course) as well as my buddies the Bibb City Ramblers, Blue Harvest, Wildwood Bluegrass, and The Gravey Robbers. I’ll write a more detailed article later in the week with more information on all the bands. For now all you need to know is that the festival is from 1:00 to 6:00 at the Front Avenue Amphitheater just down from The Space Science Center and that admission is free though donations are accepted with all proceeds going to Columbus Hospice.
There ya go. There’s your weekend best as I can tell. Consider yourself scooped.
